Here is a potted history of the chairs.
This pair of his-and-her lounge chairs were of the design made for the lounges of ocean-going steamers, airships and trains. Manufactured in 1931, these chairs have been in the same Scottish family from new and spent nearly 75 years facing out over the beautiful Rothesay Bay in the Firth of Clyde.
Their first home was Glenbeg House. A grand, imposing home that received many important visitors. A particular draw were the many seances held there, a popular practice with grieving families looking to connect with lost soldiers following the Great War. Indeed, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once attended a seance there.
The family and chairs moved in 1985 to a lovely seafront apartment in Rothesay where visitors would sit most days gazing out over the Winter Gardens and flowerbeds on the promenade to the gorgeous view of the bay. Between the chairs, a table sat with a pair of binoculars for viewing the numerous ships, boats and birds on the bay.
The chairs eventually moved south in 2009 at which point they were carefully restored. Since then, they have been lovingly enjoyed for viewing the garden in their last home.
