Hand thrown Naked Raku fired Chevron vase, by King's Sutton based ceramicist, Helen Woolner

Helen works from her studio in King’s Sutton, near Banbury, where she makes thrown ceramic vessels, sometimes functional domestic stoneware but her main passion is for Raku or Naked Raku fired pieces, where the clay is burnished smooth and the patterns drawn on with wax resist or masking tape, a sacrificial glaze is applied on top before the tape is peeled away enabling the patterns to become blackened when the pot is fired & placed into a sawdust filled smoke box. After smoking the pieces are doused in cold water which makes the glaze crack off like an eggshell to reveal the smoke patterns on the burnished surface beneath.

Raku wares are not watertight, so please use as decorative items or with dried flowers.
